Edvard Grieg’s Andante con moto begins the concert: a deep, solemn movement, the sole fragment of an unfinished trio, it is an intense meditation on loss and profound melancholy. Sorrow gives way to the breathless excitement of courtship and tantalising romance of Claire Cowan’s Subtle Dances, before Robert Schumann finishes with brilliant, joyful devotion in Piano Trio No. 2 in F Major. Written shortly after his long-awaited marriage to Clara, this sunlit masterpiece is filled with the effusive affection of a besotted husband, a beautiful "luminous image" of love realised.
Described as a “national treasure” (NZ Herald), NZTrio He Taonga Wairere is renowned for its eclectic repertoire, outstanding talent and warm kiwi stage presence. Bringing together three incredibly accomplished artists: Amalia Hall (violin), Matthias Balzat (cello) & Somi Kim (piano), every NZTrio performance powerfully reaffirms the importance and cathartic nature of a live musical experience in today’s digital world.
