Tāmaki Herenga Waka Gallery

Tāmaki Herenga Waka means 'the gathering place of many waka', and these new permanent galleries chronicle Auckland's past, capture its present, and look to the future.

The journey begins with the three iwi that make up the Museum's Taumata-ā-Iwi: Ngāti Whātua, Ngāti Paoa and Waikato-Tainui. They are represented by three illuminated manu (birds) by artist Mike Crawford. Each iwi curated its own display with a selection of taonga in response to the question "Ko wai tātou? Who are we?"

Getting there Te huarahi ki reira

You can take public transportation, drive and park in the museum's parking lot, or even walk or cycle if you're in the central Auckland area. The museum is located in the beautiful Auckland Domain, and once you arrive, you can enter through the main entrance on the east side of the building.

Head to the Auckland War Memorial Museum for Twilight Tuesdays: Museum Late Night and explore the galleries when it is less crowded.
