Matariki brings the rising of the stars in the mid-winter dawn which marks a time to reflect on the past year, remember loved ones, celebrate, and set aspirations for the future. We will be exploring Māori patterns and blending traditional style with a modern twist by using different techniques and mediums including spray paint with stencils, paint markers and free flow space painting.
Participants will learn the basics around letterforms and building layers to create their own canvas to take home. The artist will be encouraged to gift their artwork to a loved one

Josh Moetara
Josh Moetara is a mural artist from Te Tai Tokerau Northland, who has studied Art & Design as well as Māori Tikanga (customs & protocols). He is passionate about inspiring young people.
Josh is currently studying a Diploma in Youth Development through Praxis and is working as an Arts Educator at Kākano Youth Arts Collective within Corban Estate Arts Centre Henderson.
Josh’s recent work includes signage at St Mary’s Church on Taniwha St, large-scale mural in Avondale for hip-hop artist Melodownz, and graphic design for a charitable run club fundraising for the Auckland City Mission.
