In the heart of Wynyard Quarter, the ASB Waterfront Theatre is perfectly positioned on Auckland’s vibrant waterfront. Modern, light-filled and right by the water, it’s one of the city’s most distinctive performance spaces.

Here’s everything you need to plan the perfect night around your show.

Immerse yourself in the waterfront

Arrive early and take some time to explore the theatre’s neighbourhood, one of Auckland’s most walkable and vibrant waterfront precincts.

Start your stroll along North Wharf, where impressive superyachts line the marina and colourful street art brings the laneways to life. The area’s public art trail features more than a dozen works from local and international artists. Just a few minutes away, Silo 6 offers a striking exhibition space inside a cluster of converted concrete silos, hosting rotating installations and cultural events throughout the year.

If you’re visiting on a Sunday, hop aboard the historic Auckland Dockline Tram for a nostalgic loop around Wynyard Quarter as a fun and easy way to get a feel for the area’s history and changing skyline.

Continue your walk to Karanga Plaza Harbour Pool, an enclosed saltwater pool floating right in the heart of the city where locals gather to soak up the sun and skyline views. Dip your toes into the tidal steps or cool off with a swim.

Extend your visit by crossing the Te Wero Wynyard Crossing Bridge to the Viaduct Harbour. Along the way, stop in at Hui Te Ananui a Tangaroa New Zealand Maritime Museum to explore New Zealand’s rich seafaring heritage and interactive exhibitions. Behind the museum, you’ll find Hobson Wharf Pocket Park, a small green space with musical seesaws, public seating, and one of the best spots for a peaceful harbour view.

Those keen to explore further should join a guided Aucky Walky Tour or hire an e-bike from Power to the Pedal to take in more of Auckland’s waterfront art and architecture. Power to the Pedal is based at the Park Hyatt Hotel, right by Wynyard Quarter.

Waterfront dining and drinks

The theatre’s waterfront location puts you within steps of some of Auckland’s best dining. Most restaurants in the area open from late afternoon, making early bookings easy for a relaxed pre-show meal before the performance begins.

At Wynyard Quarter, Baduzzi has long been a local favourite for handmade pasta, rich Italian flavours and warm service; it's a reliable pre-show choice just down the street from the theatre. Wynyard Pavilion is another great option for a relaxed dinner or drink by the water, with open-air seating and views across the marina.

If you’d like to start your evening with a drink, Good George North Wharf serves craft beer, burgers and more in a laid-back setting, while Saint Alice and Dr Rudi’s on the Viaduct Harbour combine great food with elevated views of the harbour, both ideal for pre-show sundowners with friends. Hello Beasty, also in the Viaduct, is a favourite for bold Asian-fusion dishes and quick, friendly service that makes it perfect for early diners.

After the curtain falls

Step back out into the night and make the most of Auckland’s harbour atmosphere. For a post-show drink, head to The Lula Inn or Parasol & Swing, both open late with outdoor seating and views of the water.

If you’d like to stretch the night a little further, wander towards Commercial Bay, where bars like Queens Rooftop and Wineshop and Reign & Pour keep the energy high with late-night cocktails, harbour views, and a relaxed atmosphere. From there, it’s just a few minutes’ walk to Giapo, where you can finish your evening with deliciously imaginative gelato creations.

Thinking of turning your evening into a long weekend or staycation? There are plenty of places to stay nearby. Hilton Auckland, perched at the end of Princes Wharf, offers unbeatable views across the harbour, while Sofitel Auckland Viaduct Harbour delivers French-inspired luxury just a few minutes’ walk from the theatre.

M Social Auckland offers modern rooms overlooking the harbour, just a short stroll from the theatre and Viaduct restaurants, while The Hotel Britomart blends contemporary design with a focus on sustainability right in the heart of the stylish Britomart precinct. For something boutique, Ohtel Auckland offers 5-star mid century inspired accommodation in a small, artful package.

Wherever you choose to stay, you’ll wake up just steps from the city’s best cafés, shops, and ferry connections. See more top picks in our guide to central city hotels.
