You don’t need to travel far to feel a sense of escape from the everyday. Without leaving Auckland, you could be waking among a vineyard, soaking in an outdoor bath on a secluded island, teeing off beside the Pacific Ocean or embracing nature in the Waitākere rainforest. And if you’d rather stay central, some of Auckland’s best dining, shopping and spa experiences are waiting right in the city.
These seven luxury escapes have all the little details taken care of, from where to stay and eat to the experiences worth booking while you’re there.

1. The ultimate city escape
Stay: Hilton Auckland
Check into Hilton Auckland on the waterfront and start the following morning with breakfast at FISH Restaurant, where floor-to-ceiling windows frame the water while you enjoy fresh pastries, seasonal produce and cooked-to-order favourites. Later, slow things down with time at the indoor pool, before returning to the waterfront for a relaxed drink.
Spend the afternoon between the designer stores and luxury boutiques of Britomart, Commercial Bay and Queen Street. As the light begins to change, head up the Sky Tower for a pre-dinner drink at SkyBar, taking in Auckland from above before returning for dinner at FISH Restaurant. Settle in for a refined waterfront dining experience, with fresh local produce and views across the Waitematā Harbour.
Make it extra special: Leave the city behind for the day aboard a private yacht with Cruise New Zealand for a day of swimming, dining and island-hopping, or fly by helicopter to Waiheke Island for lunch among the vines at Mudbrick Vineyard.

2. The Matakana food & wine escape
Stay: Takatu Lodge & Vineyard
Just an hour north of Auckland, Matakana brings together vineyard-dotted countryside, celebrated local produce, art and excellent places to eat – all within a short drive of each other.
Begin at the Matakana Village Farmers’ Market, gathering local produce and treats before checking into Takatu Lodge & Vineyard and settling into the slower pace of the countryside with a glass of local wine.
Make your next stop Brick Bay for a long lunch at The Glass House before wandering its two-kilometre sculpture trail through native bush, wetlands and open pasture. Spend the afternoon browsing Matakana Village’s galleries and boutiques or stop for a cellar-door tasting at Matakana Estate or Heron’s Flight.
Then retreat to Takatu for a private dinner overlooking the vines, followed by a glass of wine beside the fire. The next morning, take your time with a leisurely breakfast before stopping at Chocolate Brown in Warkworth for handmade chocolates and coffee on the journey home.

3. The Waiheke wine & wellness escape
Stay: Delamore Lodge
For an escape that starts the moment you leave the mainland, cross the Hauraki Gulf to Waiheke Island by ferry – or arrive in more memorable fashion by helicopter.
Built into the hillside above Owhanake Bay, Delamore Lodge pairs sweeping gulf views with the privacy and intimacy of a boutique island retreat. Begin with a long lunch at Mudbrick Vineyard, followed by a private tasting among the vines, before continuing to Allpress Olive Groves for an olive oil tasting experience, then returning to the lodge for a five-course dinner paired with local wines as the sun sets over the water.
The next day belongs entirely to you. Book a deeply relaxing massage or spa treatment, spend a few hours discovering Waiheke’s beaches and boutique vineyards, or charter a private sailing experience with Terra & Tide and explore the island from the water.
Make it extra special: Delamore offers curated packages combining accommodation, dining, spa treatments and island experiences, leaving even less for you to organise.

4. The ultimate nature, golf & wellness retreat
Stay: Te Arai Lodge
For fresh coastal air, exceptional golf and the luxury of having nowhere else you need to be, head north to Te Arai Lodge.
Ease into the stay with a spa treatment, private yoga session or soak in the cedar spa before taking to the fairways at Te Ārai Links. Its two spectacular links courses roll through dunes and coastal landscape beside the Pacific Ocean; add a caddie, take your time over the round and follow it with a long lunch overlooking the coast.
The next day, swap golf clubs for riding boots on a guided horseback trek through native bush and along the shoreline. Spend the afternoon swimming, surfing or simply walking the sands of Te Ārai Beach, then return to the lodge for garden-to-table dining and a relaxed evening.
Wake up to a slow breakfast before a final coastal walk, beach-bike ride or paddleboarding at sunrise.

5. The island wellness retreat
Stay: Parohe Island Retreat, Kawau Island
There are few better ways to disappear for a couple of days than retreating to an island. Drive north to Sandspit and take the pre-arranged ferry with Kawau Cruises across to the island, where native bush, sheltered water and sea views make you feel a world away from the pace of the city. Check into a cabin, cabana or villa, slip into an outdoor bath surrounded by bush and find yourself shifting to island time.
Spend your stay moving between yoga or Pilates, the sauna and pool, therapeutic massage and nourishing meals made with fresh, locally sourced produce. When you feel like exploring, take a kayak or paddleboard onto the water, follow the island’s walking trails or swim in the bay.
Then, as darkness settles over Kawau Island, sink back into the outdoor bath beneath the stars.

6. The luxury west coast hideaway
Stay: Maison Blanc Lodge, Titirangi
Less than an hour from central Auckland, you can trade city streets for a private lodge enveloped in the lush Waitākere rainforest.
At Maison Blanc Lodge, the heated outdoor pool, spa and Japanese cedar sauna make staying put extremely tempting. But for guests staying two nights or more, the complimentary Porsche Cayenne offers an equally enticing reason to head out. Follow winding roads through the Waitākere Ranges towards Piha or Muriwai to explore the black-sand beaches, dramatic headlands and untamed Tasman coastline.
Return to the quiet of the lodge for canapés and drinks beside the fire, followed by a three-course dinner prepared by a private chef. The next morning begins with birdsong and a cooked brunch, with rainforest walks and the galleries and shops of Titirangi waiting when you’re ready to venture out again.

7. The ultimate Matakana countryside escape
Stay: Matakana Estate Lodge
Gather your favourite people and take over Matakana Estate Lodge for a weekend of vineyard views, private dining and plenty of relaxation.
Around an hour from central Auckland, the lodge overlooks the vines and comes with expansive living spaces and an indoor heated pool. Arrive to a glass of Matakana Estate wine, unpack and settle into your surroundings.
On Saturday morning, browse the Matakana Village Farmers’ Market, then explore the village’s boutiques and galleries before returning to the estate for a wine-blending experience, creating your own blend with guidance from a sommelier.
Spend the afternoon discovering local wineries and producers or exploring the Matakana Coast, then leave dinner in the hands of a private chef for an indulgent meal with matched wines, served at the lodge. Finish the evening with a swim in the heated indoor pool or a nightcap in one of the spacious living areas.
The following morning, head to Omaha Beach for a walk along its three kilometres of white sand. For a final indulgence before heading home, book an in-house massage or a private tasting at the estate.
