Where to stay
If you're touching down in Auckland and want to take it easy on day one, staying near the airport can be a smart move, especially for families with young kids. Options like ibis budget Auckland Airport Hotel and Heartland Hotel Auckland Airport are affordable and fuss-free, perfect for a quick stopover. For elevated comfort and amenities, Sudima Auckland Airport, Te Arikinui Pullman Auckland Airport Hotel, and Novotel Auckland Airport Hotel all offer excellent family-friendly service and onsite dining. The Sebel Auckland Manukau also offers a modern stay just a short drive away.
Basing yourself in central Auckland gives you easy access to top attractions, the harbour and family-friendly dining. For beautiful harbour views and a touch of luxury, Mövenpick Hotel Auckland, M Social Auckland, Pullman Auckland Hotel & Apartments, The Sebel Quay West Auckland, and voco Auckland City Centre offer great experiences within walking distance of the Viaduct Harbour and waterfront and key attractions like the Sky Tower.
Travelling with teens? LyLo Auckland is a bold, design-led option with rooms for groups and shared spaces that make it feel more social and fun. Families wanting more room to spread out might enjoy apartment-style options like Abstract Hotel, SOHO Hotel Auckland, or Parkside Hotel & Apartments. And if you’re after simple and central, ibis budget Auckland Central is a reliable base for a city stay without the big price tag.
Day One: Arrival, adventure & waterfront fun
Morning
If you’re staying near the airport, once you've checked in and freshened up, head to Butterfly Creek. It’s just minutes from the airport and offers much more than just butterflies! There’s a small farm, crocodiles, petting zoo and a dinosaur kingdom the kids will love. Next door is Treasure Island Golf, where the whole family can putt their way through a pirate-themed course. If you’re keen for some family competition but prefer to stay more central, Lilliputt Mini Golf is a scenic course, just across from the water on Tamaki Drive.
Lunch
Head into town and stop in at Harbour Eats at Commercial Bay for lunch. With a wide range of food vendors under one roof, it’s ideal for feeding hungry kids (and indecisive adults) without the fuss of multiple bookings.
Alternatively, take a short drive over the Harbour Bridge to Sugar at the Chelsea Sugar Factory in Birkenhead. Set on the water’s edge with stunning views of the Waitematā Harbour, this relaxed café offers a menu full of family favourites and sweet treats, plus a playground and on-site sugar factory tours.
Afternoon
Then take your pick of some city-centre fun. Brave the heights of the Sky Tower, where you can step on a glass floor 220m above ground and see the sights of Auckland with a bird’s eye view. Or explore the imaginative world of nearby Wētā Workshop Unleashed, where movie-making comes to life in a hands-on, fantastical experience. If your crew’s keen for more, the All Blacks Experience is just next door — it’s interactive, inspiring, and full of energy as you test your own skills with challenges and learn more about New Zealand’s iconic rugby teams.
Evening
After a big first day, ease into the evening with a laid-back dinner. For a relaxed bite in the heart of the city, Andy's Burgers & Bar at SkyCity is a hit with families. Also within the SkyCity precinct, Federal Delicatessen (The Fed) is a New York–style deli with speedy service and a relaxed vibe that works well for families. If you're in the mood for something a little more refined, Masu offers contemporary Japanese dining in a stylish, welcoming setting. With robata grill dishes and beautifully crafted sushi, it's a great option for families with older kids or anyone keen to round out the day with something special.
Day Two: Culture, creatures and ice cream dreams
Morning
Begin your day with a sweet treat from Cinnamon Squared. This charming bakery specialises in handcrafted cinnamon rolls made with organic Ceylon cinnamon. It's the perfect spot for a morning indulgence before diving into the day's activities.
From here, head to the Tāmaki Paenga Hira Auckland War Memorial Museum in the Auckland Domain, one of the city’s most iconic landmarks. The museum’s natural history displays, Māori cultural galleries, and interactive science exhibits offer plenty to capture young imaginations, with the surrounding Domain lawns ideal for a runaround afterwards.
You’ve got a couple more great options depending on your family's interests. Animal lovers can take a trip to Auckland Zoo Te Whare Karare-he o Tāmaki Makaurau, where over 135 species can be encountered across 17 hectares of award-winning habitats.
Alternatively, head next door to MOTAT (Museum of Transport and Technology) for a seriously fun time travelling through history. From vintage trams and aviation displays to hands-on science zones, MOTAT is both educational and packed with play.
Lunch
Ready for a refuel? Treat the family to a memorable lunch at one of these central Auckland spots:
- Located on the top floor of Mövenpick Hotel Auckland, Boda offers modern Korean fusion cuisine with stunning views over the city and harbour. The relaxed atmosphere makes it a great choice for families.
- For a more casual and diverse dining experience, head to Elliott Stables. This unique dining precinct offers a variety of international cuisines, allowing everyone to choose their preferred eatery while dining together in a communal setting.
Afternoon
Spend your afternoon down by the water at SEA LIFE Kelly Tarlton’s aquarium on Tamaki Drive. See penguins waddling across icy landscapes, spot stingrays up close in the underwater tunnel, and learn about sea life from across the globe.
From there, take a scenic walk or drive to Mission Bay and grab dinner at Azabu Mission Bay, a stylish spot that delivers fresh Japanese-Peruvian flavours with a beachfront view.
Evening
Before heading back to the hotel, make a detour to Giapo, a must-do dessert experience in Auckland. This isn’t your average ice cream. Expect sculptural cones, impressive presentation, and inventive flavours for the most memorable sweet treat you've ever tasted.
Day Three: An island escape and harbour discoveries
Morning
Head downtown to jump aboard a scenic ferry ride to Waiheke Island with Fullers360. The journey across the Hauraki Gulf offers stunning views of the city skyline, and in just 40 minutes, you'll arrive on an island known for its beaches, food and wine, and laid-back charm.
Lunch
Make your way to The Heke Kitchen, Brewery & Distillery, a relaxed, family-friendly spot surrounded by native bush. With plenty of space for kids to roam and a menu packed with wood-fired pizza, local produce, and a few chilled, distilled favourites for the grown-ups, it’s an ideal lunch stop before heading back to the city.
Afternoon
After arriving back in the city by ferry, swing by Hui Te Ananui a Tangaroa New Zealand Maritime Museum, conveniently located right at the Viaduct Harbour. Explore interactive exhibits, model ships, and stories that bring Aotearoa’s rich seafaring history to life.
Evening
For your final night, make it a meal to remember. If you're staying in the city, you’re spoiled for choice. Ebisu offers refined Japanese cuisine with a waterfront outlook, set within the surrounds of the historic Union Fish Company in Britomart precinct. Head to Beast & Butterflies at M Social for fun fusion flavours. For something bold and playful, Hello Beasty delivers modern Asian fusion in a vibrant Viaduct location.
Or, try Baduzzi at Wynyard Quarter, which is famous for its meatballs and handmade pasta. If you’re after a waterfront dining experience with a focus on fresh, sustainable seafood, FISH at Hilton Auckland on Princes Wharf is a refined yet relaxed option with views across the Waitematā — perfect for a final evening in the city.
