Rugby, New Zealand’s most beloved sport, is uniting students from across the world in Auckland.

For several years, the Rugby Have a Go programme, delivered by Auckland Rugby International Academy, has been hosting students from tertiary and language schools. Recently, it extended its programme to high schools.

At the time writing 75 international students from more than 25 different countries have experienced a taste of Kiwi culture by learning the skills and values of rugby from local upcoming rugby stars. Rugby Have a Go has provided the opportunity for students to get active and meet students from different ages, countries and institutions.

Lynne Jonah Pomeleu, from Papua New Guinea, is studying a Bachelor of Science at Auckland University of Technology; she says she got a greater understanding of the passion New Zealand has for this sport and also learned key life skills. “No matter if your teammate is a stranger, everybody feels the love and the connection in the field, communicates and plays a good game. [I learnt that] communication is one of the important keys in teamwork.”

It made me feel more connected to New Zealanders.

Ayla Kim from South Korea is studying a Bachelor of Creative Arts and Design at Media Design School; her time spent at Rugby Have a Go has reminded her of the importance of getting active and the impact it has on your wellbeing.

Every muscle in my body was sore the next day, which is good! I barely have a chance to play sports in my daily life due to lack of time, resource or a team to play with. I felt great after running around for a few hours and didn't even feel tired because I was having fun.

It's such a great experience to get to know more about Kiwi culture. Also, it's always good and important to go out and exercise.
