Auckland Tourism, Events and Economic Development (ATEED) invested in major events, on behalf of Auckland Council, to deliver economic and social benefits for Auckland.
ATEED’s major events investment decisions were based on Auckland’s Major Events Strategy, then Destination AKL 2025.
ATEED took a portfolio approach to major events, which saw the value of Auckland’s Major Events Portfolio as the sum of all the events and the combined results they brought for generating visitor nights, attendance, contribution to regional GDP and liveability – making Auckland an interesting and desirable place to live, work and visit.
Below are the contracted amounts ATEED agreed to invest up to for events in Auckland’s Major Events Portfolio. All ATEED investments were subject to performance-based contracts.
From 2011 to 1 December 2020 (when ATEED became part of the new agency Tātaki Auckland Unlimited), ATEED-supported major events contributed more than $514 million to the regional economy and generated 3.15 million visitor nights.
ATEED invested in and delivered four major Auckland cultural events on behalf of Auckland Council (Tāmaki Herenga Waka, Diwali, Pasifika and Lantern). Unfortunately, the Pasifika Festival was cancelled in 2019 due to the Christchurch terror attacks; and the 2020 Pasifika and Lantern festivals were cancelled because of COVID-19 alert level restrictions in force at the scheduled time.
ATEED did not invest in regional or community events – these are supported by Auckland Council.
