The America’s Cup
Recognised as the pinnacle of sailing, Auckland’s waterfront will play host to the America’s Cup – the oldest trophy in international sport – following Emirates Team New Zealand winning the cup in Bermuda in 2017. The Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC)
Holding the APEC summit is a once in every 20 years investment and opportunity. APEC 2021 involves a year of hosting for New Zealand, from December 2020 to November 2021, culminating in Leaders’ Week in Auckland from 8 to 14 November 2021. Around 10,000 attendees are expected to visit the city.

Rugby World Cup 2021
The hugely successful Women’s Rugby World Cup 2017 in Ireland enjoyed unprecedented viewing across Ireland, France, the United Kingdom and the United States. New Zealand’s North Island will play host to the Rugby World Cup 2021 in July and August 2021.
Top female players from 12 nations will play in front of huge crowds at The Trusts Arena, Albany Stadium, Northland Events Centre and Eden Park in Auckland.
On announcement of the successful bid, New Zealand Rugby Board member and former Black Ferns captain Farah Palmer said, “We are honoured and excited to be awarded Rugby World Cup 2021 and look forward to delivering the first women’s Rugby World Cup tournament in the Southern Hemisphere.”
Te Matatini 2021
If you want to get to the heart of New Zealand’s indigenous Māori culture, then you can’t afford to miss the nation’s premier Kapa Haka festival Te Matatini, being held at Eden Park, Auckland, from 23 to 27 February 2021.
Kapa haka is the term for Māori performing arts, and literally translates to form a line (kapa) and dance (haka). It involves an emotional and powerful combination of song, dance and chanting. Many performances include skilled demonstrations of traditional weaponry.
Te Matatini Chairman, Selwyn Parata is delighted to bring the festival back to Tāmaki Makaurau and to rugby’s spiritual home, saying, “Eden Park is the largest stadium in the country and it is only right we take the most important event in Māoridom to a venue of such significance. Set right in the heart of Auckland city and close to train stations and other public transport, we are certain the stadium has the ability to accommodate kaumatua [elders], whānau [family] and kapa haka performers as well.”
The festival provides the chance for people to come together to celebrate the indigenous culture of Aotearoa in a spectacular way, bringing the stories of Auckland to life for residents and tourists alike.
